This Week in The Woods

Corduroy road built with the forwarder.

Maybe we should have titled this, “The Winter that Never Was.” In November, we had the privilege of going on vacation for the first time in our lives! Mr. Kimball had never been on an airplane and has always said he didn’t care about going to sit around some pool or at the ocean. He has always had too much to do. I made him go anyway and we came home refreshed and ready to face the winter of long hours and hard work, but winter never came! Or at least it hasn’t yet.

Due to this unusually warm weather, our crews will likely only be able to accomplish about half of what we set out to do for the season. If it is going to be like this, we just hope it stays like this so it is a quick spring. Darn weather, messes everything up. The whole tree crew moved up north to Farmington in hopes of salvaging some of winter, but even that wasn’t going to work because the ground was too soft for that system. Fortunately, we have the cut to length system which is more suited for fragile grounds, so we will move them up there. It is just like a puzzle… gotta fit the pieces together to make it all work.

Landing we built for this winter….. hope we get to use it soon….

We ended up moving the whole tree crew to Anson which is an hour and a half drive…. for us southern Maine loggers that’s a HAUL. We are spoiled and like working close to home. The silver lining is that the trucks are closer to the mills up there and, well we can actually work.

The beavers are cutting more wood than we are this winter.
